Shortly after moving into our house we began remodeling the den into the girl's playroom. We realized pretty quickly that they were in desperate need of some sort of desk or play table since they had taken matters in their own hands and started using this window seat as a surface to color. Also, Alayah will be starting second grade in the fall and Mya will be starting first grade and they are quickly out growing the little pink picnic table my mom bought them which is where they do their homework. I always window shop at pottery barn and had been eyeing this art play table for forever. I loved the built in storage and paper roll and how functional and cute it was. At the end of the day, the table and chairs comes out to about $750 bucks plus shipping and that was a price I could not bring myself to spend. And then one day it occurred to me that we could probably build the table ourselves. I searched for "pottery barn art play table" and obviously Ana White the queen of DIY furniture herself had building plans. Thank God! We basically followed the plans to a T. At first we set the legs on the inside of the table as directed but the chairs didn't fit and it made it way too snug for both of the girls to sit next to each other. In order to fix this problem we simply took legs out and attached it to the very edge of the table with some wood glue and finishing nails. Here's a photo of what the legs ended up looking like. I then painted the table white and sealed it with some polycrylic. Finally, we found some copper tube straps at the hardware store and nailed them in to hang the dowel for the paper roll. Overall, we spent about $150 dollars on the materials for the table and $108 total for the chairs which brought us to a grand total of $258 for the table and chairs. I'd say that is a huge win! Our girls love their art table and I'm so glad we were able to find a way to make it happen! Our girls love their art table and I'm so glad we were able to find a way to make it happen!
